Friday Financial Tidbit-The importance of writing down your dreams and goals

Credit: Hubpages.com

Setting goals and then accomplishing them is one of the hardest things to do.  But one of the best ways to ensure that you accomplish your goals and reach your dreams is to write them down.  This might sound simple, perhaps unnecessary, but it does make a difference whether or not your goals will get accomplished.

To help you out with goal setting and writing them down I created a new worksheet entitled the Setting Financial Goals spreadsheet to help you with writing down your financial goals. Simply list your financial goals for 6 months, 12 months, 2 years, 3 years, and 5 years.  To figure out what really are your goals, try sitting down and thinking of a wants vs. needs list and then list them in the order you want them to be accomplished.  Next, figure out how much your goals will cost and list them.  Finally, calculate how you will accomplish this by budgeting, sacrificing, or any other means of paying for your goals.  Your goals can be anything from getting out of debt, to reaching a financial milestone, or a purchase you want to make.  By writing them down and reviewing them every once in a while you will be able to reach your goals more quickly than if you had not written them down.  In addition, it will keep you accountable to yourself or accountable to your spouse if you are married.

My wife and I have started to write down our financial goals and absolutely love it!  The communication it has brought into our marriage is incredible as well as the fact that sharing the same future plans is an amazing feeling.  It also has allowed us to reach our goals faster by having decided what we are going to do with money before we get it and using our blueprint when the money comes in.  All this because we took the time to write our goals and dreams down on paper and not just leave them in our heads.

How has writing down your goals helped you out?

  1. Love goal setting. Nothing gets me fired up like thinking about my goals. I read something like “An unwritten goal is just dream” or something like that. Writing it down is such a simple thing but seeing it on paper really makes a difference.

Ashley thanks for the comment. I really like that quote you gave. The only thing that is better than goal setting is having those goals come true! It is amazing how many more of my goals get done when I actually physically write them down instead of having them in my mind. I bet my goals are 5x more likely to get done if they are written down compared to leaving them in my head.
